Fall brings beautiful changing leaves and cooler weather, but it also brings a few maintenance issues that every homeowner should be aware of. Here are some common fall cleanup tasks that you’ll want to take care of before winter comes.

Gutters and Roof

The gutters and roof often accumulate leaves, twigs, and other debris during the fall. Before any big winter storms arrive, you should make sure that the gutters are clear of leaves and debris. Check for signs of disrepair to the roof, and go up in the attic to make sure things are dry. Taking care of any issues now will reduce your risk for damage from ice dams and other winter weather hazards.

Window Wells and Problem Areas

Window wells and other problem areas will often trap leaves and debris during the fall. Clear out any areas where this debris can build up, as animals will often use it to build nests. Cleaning these areas on a regular basis will help keep pests far from your home.

Landscapes

Fall is a great time to set your plants up for a successful spring growing season. Cut and prune plants to prepare them for winter based on their growth needs. With plants trimmed back, fall also offers a great opportunity to reevaluate your hardscape. Fall’s mild weather is an ideal time to add a patio, deck, or stonework to enhance your outdoor living space.

By addressing some basic fall cleanup now, you will avoid potential maintenance problems later on. Taking care of your home helps it become a true investment that will look great and keep your family happy and comfortable for years to come.
