Insulating Basement Walls

Capstone Custom Homes - Spray Insulation

Quality insulation is essential for keeping your basement at a comfortable temperature. Capstone basements come standard with R11 basement insulation for the top four feet of the wall and R19 on the rim board. With proper insulation, you can save big on your energy bills and have your basement better equipped for future upgrades.

Things to Consider

Capstone’s standard of insulating the top 4 feet of the basement wall is because this area is the most exposed to the elements — and therefore the most likely area to experience heat loss. The block below the dirt line is fairly well insulated by the soil. However, if you want to finish your basement soon, you may be better served by upgrading to spray foam when framing the basement.

Keeping It Dry

Just as important as keeping your basement warm is keeping it dry! That’s why all Capstone homes come with GMX Ultrashield waterproofing, which is backed by a 30-year manufacturer’s warranty. Keeping the basement dry will ensure that water doesn’t leak into this space and expand cracks during Ohio’s frequent freeze-thaw cycles.

When to Choose Spray Foam

Spray foam is a popular upgrade that can help you save money on energy bills in the long term. Spray foam uses a blower to apply insulation in areas where a technician can’t reach — including backfilling areas that have already been closed off. When used in conjunction with our standard insulation boards, you get the best possible performance, free of air leaks and other issues.

While Capstone’s standard basement insulation and waterproofing is a good start, you may want to upgrade to spray foam insulation if you plan on finishing this space in the near future. With quality insulation, you can more efficiently heat and cool your home and make the most of this space.
