Making the Most of the Back Porch

While Ohio has its fair share of extreme heat and cold, there are also plenty of times of year when the weather is perfect for spending more time outdoors! For many homeowners, a screened-in porch, deck, or an outdoor kitchen is essential for making the most of their outdoor space. Here are some things to consider as you look at your options for enhancing your back porch.

Screened-in Porch

Mosquitos and other bugs can be a major pain — especially during the summer! A screened in porch lets you enjoy the outside air even when insects are at their most active. For even more protection from the elements, you could also consider a 3-seasons room instead of a screened-in porch. With full windows, a 3-season room provides added protection against wind and moisture, even though it doesn’t have a heat source.

Deck

If you want a large outdoor structure on your property (or want something more affordable than a screened-in porch), a deck is a good option. Wood decking tends to be more affordable than stonework or concrete, while also providing design flexibility to design almost any space you want. With proper staining and treatment, you can ensure lasting longevity for your deck boards.

Fire Pits and Cooking Surfaces

We’ve seen a lot more homeowners interested in outdoor cooking spaces in recent years. During the spring, summer, and fall, a grill or even a brick-oven style heating source can help you enjoy cooking outside (and even declutter the kitchen a little). An outdoor fire pit or cooking area also provides an ideal place to gather and chat while the food is being prepared.
